When "Ashwamegh Yagna" was done
Lord Rama thought in due course
To perform in convention
And despatch the "Yagnya" horse ||1||

One who stops the horse
Has a challenge sought
Naive Lav - Kush caught it
Battle will be fought? ||2||

When Lav - Kush catch the horse
'Raghu' family came in plight
The brave they retreated
Though many came to fight ||1||

When "Hanuman" fought with twins
He saw Rama in their eyes
Happy he bore strikes
'Brahma Gnyana' was his prize ||2||

Soldiers ran helter-skelter
Lav-Kush bolts were very stormy
They got into "Samadhi"
The worthy Rama's army. ||3||

Laxmana looked intently
At the children's pleated hairs
In childhood Rama had
Hair that would compare. ||4||

Laxmana and Shatrughan
Braves of Raghu fold
Recognized the twins
As Rama's children bold ||5||

The innocent pregnant Sita
Was left in forest haplessly
This pure 'Devi''s' given birth
To jewels of 'Raghu' family ||6||

How to tell this to the Lord
Make father and sons meet
Everybody thought it over
Idea struck them neat ||7||

In the end Rama was told
"Two small kids have thrown us back"
Lord asked them what they should do?
How to save horse from attack ||8||

"Unbeatable are the twins
You alone can help us win
Debate with them on 'Shastra'
Examine their knowledge within ||9||

Challenged by you they will lose
And will fall at your feet contrite."
At the scene when Lord arrived
Saw the kids and was surprised ||10||

They were kids handsome and bright
Piercing doubtful eyes but smart
When they aimed arrows at Him
Bows fell, mother was in His heart ||11||

As the Lord observed the twins
Founts of love flowed from His soul
Events of past years he recalled
Tears rolled down out of control ||12||

When I cast away my Sita
She'd have suffered so much grief
My kids too would be this age
Like "Tapas" twins is my belief ||13||

Hearing news of children great
People of "Ayodhya" came
Soldiers of the Lord thoughtful
To hear the kids alert became ||14||

Lord with choking voice controlled
Not knowing grooming Sita's done
Supreme knowledge questions posed
Flawless answer gave each son ||15||

*'Shaastra" here means science of mystical knowledge.
'Devi' means goddess
"Tapas" signifies the glow on one's visage that comes with pursuit of knowledge and meditative practices.
